Get to know us...
Troop 449/6449 is a linked male and female, traveling, backpacking, camping, scout-led troop in Overland Park, Kansas.
Chartered by St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, we are part of the Soaring Eagle District of the Heart of America Council.
We focus on building character, citizenship, and fitness through a program founded in self-directed experiences for the scouts, not limited by geography, terrain, or activity.
When and Where?
We hold our meetings on Monday evenings at 7 PM. During the school year, we meet at Lakewood Middle School (6601 Edgewater Drive, Overland Park, KS 66223). In the summers—and when Lakewood Middle School isn't available—we meet at St. Francis Church (17890 Metcalf Avenue, Stilwell, KS 66085).
We'd love for you to visit us! Get in touch to confirm the meeting date and location by sending a message to scoutmaster@troop449.com.
Scouts BSA Handbook
Every Scout needs a Scout Handbook, which can be purchased at the Scout Shop (there is no difference between the version for males and the version for females other than their covers). Not only is it chock full of excellent information, it is the place Scouts record all of their Advancement and service hours. We recommend a book cover, because Scout Handbooks go everywhere Scouts go—so it takes a beating. Scouts should bring their Scout Handbook to every meeting and campout.
Scout Uniform
Scouts are expected to wear their full Class A uniform to all troop meetings, campouts, and events, unless otherwise informed by their Scoutmaster. You can find information about the uniform in your Scout Handbook, on the BSA Guide to Awards and Insignia website, and on Scout Shop.
Advancement
Scout BSA advancement differs significantly from Cub Scouts. Parents/guardians cannot sign off on completed requirements. Scouts record their all of their advancement achievements in their Scout Handbooks. When a Scout is ready to advance to the next rank, the Advancement Chair reviews their handbook, verifies their records, and records their achievements in the computer on Scoutbook.
For more about advancement, please contact the Advancement Chair or see the official Guide to Advancement.
What Are the Scout Ranks?
Scouts BSA has seven ranks:
Scout
Tenderfoot
Second Class
First Class
Star
Life
Eagle
Requirements are found in the Scout Handbook.
Fundraising, Dues, and Fees
Our troop is very fortunate to have an excellent fundraising engagement with the Overland Park Convention Center (OPCC) providing coat checks for their events from the late autumn through early spring. Scouts (and their parents/guardians/adult leaders) are stationed at the entrances to the OPCC and provide coat check for event attendees. Each scout is allotted an amount earned in their scout account comparable to the number of hours worked. The funds from this fundraising activity can be used to pay dues, summer camp fees, and so forth.
Annual troop dues are paid when we recharter each year.
Summer camp and high adventure fees are paid in the spring before the event.
Some annual activities, such as our snow sports campout in February, have additional fees paid at the time the activity is scheduled.
Please contact the troop treasurer if you have questions about dues or fundraising.
Summer Camp and High Adventure
Each year in the autumn, the scouts select a summer camp to attend for the coming summer. Summer camp is for all scouts and we highly encourage all scouts to attend. We are a traveling troop, meaning that we do not attend the same summer camp year after year. Instead, the scouts select a camp that interests them and we embark on a roadtrip to it, exploring the US as we go.
Once every other year (sometimes more frequently, sometimes less frequently), we go on a high adventure trek, which is for those scouts who are First Class rank and above and are more mature. The Scoutmaster in charge of the high adventure trek determines which scouts are eligible.
